a handsome man + the right song + a true message = a good reminder

Mike in the Middle Ages posted this recently. And it really hit me hard.

The "hook" is a cute Italian guy... the message is... correct. And needed.

And anyone out there who thinks rubbers are an evil plot by condom-nazis, I really don't want to hear it. Most of the claims made by them come straight from the religious Right (used to say why no form of protection is safe and so you shouldn't have ANY sex) - completely bogus. (For example, the failure rate of condoms is NOT 10% at all. The rate of pregnancies among those who use condoms "typically" - but NOT always - is 10%. No fucking shit! Wanna guess the percent of the time they WEREN'T using the rubbers? I'll guess at least 10.)

And we're all falling into this fucking trap. All of us... me included. But why?

I don't get it - I really don't.

Fuck, forget HIV... how 'bout Syphilis or Herpes or the fucking clap? Heck, just read a very old post of Jimbo's to get a brief synopsis.

The only real answer I can think of is... we've all become lazy and complacent.

And we'll all pay for that sooner or later.

And that hurts to think about.

But it's true.

I agree with everything in the video except the statement "a simple no." A "no" in this situation is never simple. That's being naive. But "no" is still essential. Thanks for the reminder.

And those of us who are paying for it at the moment can't begin to tell you of the joys of being infected, in the hopes that you'll never have to bear this particular cross.

I was just having this conversation in one of my classes. Given the increased rate of new HIV infections for their age group, I was not surprised to find a fairly indifferent attitude to messages about safe-sex.

Being smart is always sexier than being slutty! For the first time in 15 years the teen pregnancy rate has increased. Abstinence programs are working well. We need to fill in the education to the young people about safe sex because obviously, we are living in a world of ignorance and non-education! Guys, be smart!

I'd also add that trusting that condom use will prevent STDs including HIV should allow people to drop all this DDF clean neg UB2 bullshit you see posted everywhere. It's just an excuse for ignorance and bigotry.

Sex with an HIV+ person like me is safer if someone wears a condom than with someone who says their positive but aren't and a condom isn't used. Furthermore, safe sex with neg or poz people is safe enough that serosorting itself fundamentally becomes a poorly strategized issue of irrational fear and nothing else.
